And so it begins. This week heralds the end of Freshers’ Week and the beginning of the academic term, but before you resign last week’s events to the back of your mind, reflect if you will on just how good Freshers 2009 was!
Kicking off in true Yorkshire style, twice as many people turned up to see Scott Mills christen the new year’s parties than were expected, creating a truly electric atmosphere in Sanctuary as well as in Asylum. If you missed the first night, then you certainly missed out.
For those who couldn’t make it to Asylum on the first night, all was not lost. Sunday showcased the opening party at Sugarmill on Hull’s famous waterfront. For those who braved the queues and the cold, it gave a taste for people new to Hull just how hard we like to party. For Sugar regulars, it was simply a case of more of the same- great music, great people and an unrivalled ambience. After a bustling Freshers’ fair during the day, it was great to see the freshly acquired Sugar cards out in force, ensuring that the Mill’s loyal group of fans will return each and every Monday.
Monday provided a tantalising choice of one of the best bands around this year, The Cribs, or a second explosive night at Sugarmill. For a full review of The Cribs set, check out the homepage and follow the links. As for those who ventured into town, it was another jam-packed spectacle with hundreds of students obviously unfazed with the long nights and longer days!

A hugely successful Societies Fair saw great levels of commitment, as students signed up left, right and centre to everything from the politics society to the cocktail society, or ‘cock soc’ as many people (including themselves!) choose to refer to them. The carnival atmosphere continued right through the night as Pendulum descended on Asylum to play a ferocious DJ set. I can say from personal experience that there were many sore heads on Wednesday morning, a sure sign that it was a great night.
The rest of the week carried on very much the same, with massive nights cracking off on Wednesday at the year’s first Tower at Asylum, and a typically inspiring set from Radio One giant- Tim Westwood. But it wasn’t just at the Freshers’ events that people were diving head first into student lifestyle. Hull’s resident club nights again failed to disappoint with classically great times at [w]elly, Piper and of course, Pozition.
So while the ‘week’ may be over, and the time to grind out a work ethic has inevitably come, relax in the knowledge that in just a few days, more unmissable events return to fuel the party atmosphere. Serial pain-men Dainton and Pritchard from Dirty Sanchez will be facing off, and Asylum welcomes the return of the incredible Zane Lowe and his DJ Tour, we can’t wait to see you there!
